Community Solutions’ President, Rosanne Haggerty, and our 100,000 Homes Campaign Director, Becky Kanis, led the effort to reduce street homelessness in Times Square by 85 percent.

The day before Superstorm Sandy blew through New York City, a police officer knocked on Maria Davila’s door urging her to evacuate her apartment. Maria lived in the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Ocean Bay Apartments in Far Rockaway, Queens, bordering the beach. She lived in one of the 26 developments in evacuation Zone A. She was one of 80,000 NYCHA residents displaced from her home after Sandy.

Brownsville, Brooklyn and negative statistics citing the high crime rate, low graduation rate and the largest population of public housing in the nation are usually uttered in the same breath. But, our team at Community Solutions knows that it is a community with a wealth of resources. One of those resources is its large senior population; seniors in Brownville are active in the community and care deeply about younger generations.

Every night, more than 630,000 individuals are homeless in America; that includes more than 60,000 veterans. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Today is World Homeless Day, created to give everyone an opportunity to be a part of the solution and meet the needs of our country’s homeless individuals.

Medellín, COLOMBIA— The 100,000 Homes Campaign, coordinated by NYC-based non-profit Community Solutions, was announced today as one of two international winners of the World Habitat Award, a prestigious honor awarded annually by the Building and Social Housing Foundation in conjunction with the United Nations. The award was announced during World Habitat Day celebrations in Medellín, Columbia and will be formally presented next April at the World Urban Forum, hosted by UN-Habitat.
